How Much Does Google Apps Script Automation Cost in the UK?

Why There’s No Simple Price List

Google Apps Script automation isn’t a product you buy off the shelf. It’s custom development; someone builds exactly what your business needs, using your existing Google Workspace. The cost depends on what you need built, how complex the logic is, and how robust it needs to be.

That said, “it depends” isn’t helpful when you’re trying to budget. So here’s a realistic breakdown of what different types of automation typically cost, based on real projects.

The Cost Spectrum

Simple Automations (£200 - £500)

What this covers:

  • Single-trigger workflows (form submission → process → output)
  • Data transfer between two Google apps (Sheets → Gmail, Forms → Drive)
  • Basic conditional logic (if X, do Y)
  • Template-based email sending
  • Simple file management (rename, move, organise)

Example: A Google Form submission triggers an automated confirmation email to the respondent, adds their data to a master spreadsheet, and sends a notification to the team.

Development time: 2-5 hours Ongoing cost: £0 (runs on your Google Workspace account)

Medium-Complexity Automations (£500 - £1,500)

What this covers:

  • Multi-step workflows with branching logic
  • Data processing across multiple spreadsheets
  • Email sequences with scheduling and personalisation
  • Document generation from templates
  • Dashboard creation with calculated metrics
  • External API integrations (connecting to one or two outside services)

Example: A client onboarding system that creates a Drive folder structure, copies and populates document templates, updates multiple tracking sheets, schedules calendar events, and sends a personalised welcome sequence over 7 days.

Development time: 5-15 hours Ongoing cost: £0

Complex Systems (£1,500 - £5,000+)

What this covers:

  • Multi-system integrations with error handling and retry logic
  • High-volume data processing with batch operations and checkpointing
  • Custom web applications built on Apps Script
  • Complete workflow automation with monitoring and alerting
  • Database-like functionality with search, filtering, and reporting
  • Migration from existing SaaS tools

Example: A complete invoicing and payment tracking system that scans emails for invoices, extracts data, matches against purchase orders in Sheets, files documents in Drive, generates monthly reconciliation reports, and alerts the finance team to discrepancies; with full error handling, audit logging, and self-monitoring.

Development time: 15-50+ hours Ongoing cost: £0 (or minimal if connecting to paid external APIs)

What Affects the Price

Complexity of Logic

Simple routing (if A, do B) is cheap. Complex decision trees with multiple conditions, lookups across datasets, and exception handling take more time to build and test.

Number of Integrations

Working within Google Workspace is straightforward; the APIs are well-documented and consistent. Connecting to external services adds complexity: authentication, error handling, data format translation, and the external service’s own rate limits and quirks.

Volume and Performance Requirements

A script that processes 50 items per day is simple. One that processes 5,000 items per day needs batch processing, checkpointing, quota management, and performance optimisation. The logic might be identical, but the engineering to handle scale adds development time.

Error Handling and Monitoring

A script that runs and hopes for the best is quick to build. A script that handles every failure mode, logs everything, monitors its own health, and alerts when something needs attention takes 2-3x longer. But it’s also the script that’s still running reliably a year from now.

Documentation and Handover

Some clients want the script built, deployed, and documented so their team (or another developer) can maintain it. Documentation, code comments, and a handover session add time but save money long-term.

How It Compares to Alternatives

vs Zapier/Make

Zapier/MakeApps Script
Upfront cost£0 (free tier)£200-5,000 (development)
Monthly cost£30-200+ (scales with usage)£0
Year 1 total£360-2,400+£200-5,000 (one-time)
Year 2 total£720-4,800+£0 (maybe minor updates)
Year 3 total£1,080-7,200+£0

For anything beyond the simplest automation, Apps Script is cheaper within the first year, and dramatically cheaper over time.

vs Hiring a Full-Time Developer

A full-time developer in the UK costs £30,000-60,000+ per year. If you need 2-3 automations per year, that’s an expensive way to get them. A freelance Apps Script specialist builds what you need, when you need it, at a fraction of the cost.

vs Building It Yourself With AI

ChatGPT can write Apps Script for free. But as we’ve covered in other posts, AI-generated code works in testing and fails in production. The cost of fixing broken AI code, or worse, the cost of business damage from broken automation; usually exceeds the cost of having it built properly.

The question isn’t “can AI write this?” but “can AI maintain this, debug this at 2am, and adapt this when my business changes?”

What You’re Actually Paying For

When you hire a Google Apps Script developer, you’re not just paying for code. You’re paying for:

Knowledge of what breaks. An experienced developer has seen the quota limits, the trigger failures, the permission issues, and the edge cases. They build for these from the start, not after the first failure.

Production engineering. Error handling, retry logic, monitoring, logging, graceful degradation. The difference between code that works and a system that’s reliable.

Business understanding. Translating “I need this process to be faster” into a technical solution that actually fits how your team works.

Ongoing value. A well-built automation runs for years with minimal maintenance. The return on investment compounds every month it runs.

How to Get a Quote

Every project is different, and we don’t believe in quoting without understanding. Here’s how it works:

  1. Free 15-minute audit: Tell us what you want to automate. We’ll ask questions about your current process, volume, and tools.

  2. Scope document: We’ll outline what the automation will do, how long it will take to build, and what it will cost. No surprises.

  3. Build and deploy: We build, test with your real data, and deploy. You’re involved at every stage.

  4. Handover: Documentation, walkthrough, and support for getting it running smoothly.
